Die Fotografin und Filmemacherin Shirin Neshat verbindet und erweitert die reichen Traditionen orientalisch – persischer und westlicher Bildsprachen. Zentrale Themen ihres Schaffens sind Identität, Herkunft und Machtstrukturen, wobei sie sich unter anderem der traditionellen Kalligrafie ihres Herkunftslandes sowie der westlichen fotografischen Porträtkunst bedient. In der Ausstellung „SHIRIN NESHAT. LIVING IN ONE LAND, DREAMING IN ANOTHER” wird erstmalig in einer europäischen Institution das jüngste Werk der iranisch-amerikanischen Künstlerin Shirin Neshat, geboren 1957 in Qazvin, Iran, präsentiert. „The Book of Kings” spielt beispielsweise auf das mittelalterliche persische Epos „Shahnameh – das Buch der Könige” an.
